Mi'kmaw language classes as a part of Wije'winen - Building Community Connection

Funding Year:

2023-24

Our results did exceed our expectations because we were able to secure two Mi'kmaw language facilitators, Curtis Michael and Sunshine Paul-Martin. Instead of one cohort of 25 Mi'kmaw language learners, we were able to start a new cohort of learners every 8 weeks. We also incorporated classes with parents with children, and cooking classes that incorporate the language by partnering with our internal MNFC Early Years Program.

One major success story was the development of sensory bins with labelled items inside for children. This is something that smaller children love to play with, and can practice the Mi'kmaw names for the items as they're playing with them. These were a huge hit for the families and they were able to take the bins home with them at the end of the cohort. The cooking classes were also a major success story, because the families came here to the MNFC to cook meals together, learn about the traditional foods, learn the Mi'kmaw names for the foods, and then take home the supplies to be able to cook it again once at home.
