2025 Graduate Interview - Becky Pierro

June 16, 2025

What is your name, age, school, and what community are you from?

My name is Becky Pierro and I am 17 years old. I am currently going to Wagmatcookewey School, but soon graduating! I am from Wagmatcook First Nation.

What clubs, teams, or groups are you involved in at school, and after-school?

I took part in shot-put during track and field. I am also part of the Red Road Project. Through this program, we open up the school gym for grades 7-12 for sports night.

What’s your favourite subject in school?

My favourite subject in school is English. I love to write, read, listen and talk.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

If I could go anywhere in the world, it would have to be Croatia. Croatia is a beautiful place with low mountains and it is known for beautiful sunsets.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to practice songs with my hand drum, and I love to cruise around Cape Breton, listening to music. I especially enjoy cruising to beaches, rivers and lakes - anywhere with water.

What are your plans for when you graduate, and why?

My plan after graduation is to go to Nova Scotia Community College for Social Services. I want to help and support people in my community, as well as other communities.

What do you see yourself doing ten years from now?

In the future, I would like to help my community with the Social Services Diploma that I plan to work toward over the next two years. In my Social Services career, I will help the people of my community with anything they may need, whether that be with court support, or any type of family problems. My ultimate goal is to give back to my community.

Do you have a role model? If so, who? And why?

I have a very important role model and it’s my mother, Marjorie Pierro. My mother has always been there for me. She has taught me right from wrong. She has taught me many things, such as how to pray, how to smudge, to be kind, and to be respectful. Her favourite quote is “Make each day count.” This quote is very important to me. It is a reminder that tomorrow isn’t always promised, and to be thankful for today.

What is your best memory from your high school years?

My best memory of high school was getting to be part of a circle where people got their spirit names. My spirit name is Young Dancing Sea Turtle. My colours are rainbow. I am very happy to have been given this name! I stand loud and proud with my name! Wela’lioq Frank and Josie Augustine, for my beautiful spirit name.

What is the best thing about your school?

One of the best things about our school is how accepting and supportive everyone is. I also like that we say our Mi’kmaq prayers daily, and that anyone who wants to smudge in the morning, or anytime throughout the day, is able to. This is very important to our youth because they can say their morning prayers and cleanse themselves from negative feelings. It helps them learn to be proud of their culture, and where they come from.

Who has made an impact on you?

I would like to say a few people. However, my mother, Marjorie Pierro, has had the greatest impact on me. She has been supportive with all decisions I have made, and paths I have been on. She is always just two steps behind me - always there. I appreciate her so much. She has helped me become the person I am today. She is my inspiration. My mother has taught me to be proud and grateful for my culture. She has also taught me to be respectful towards our Elders. She always showers me with her motherly love. Wela’lin Mom.

Is there something you'd like to see in your school or community that isn't there now?

I would like to see more classes offered that teach life skills, such as cooking, carpentry at the high school level, budgeting, etc. I also believe there should be more cultural ceremonies for our youth. It is important for our youth to learn early on.

Do you have any words of advice, a personal favourite quote, or a thank-you?
