Canadian Heritage Evaluators Experience the Power of Potlotek’s Language Nest

October 8, 2026

On September 22, representatives from Canadian Heritage visited the Language Nest in Potlotek First Nation as part of an in-person knowledge-gathering trip for the Indigenous Languages Program evaluation. Hosted at the home of one of the community Elders, the nest brings together three generations of speakers, Elders, youth helpers, and toddlers to foster intergenerational language transmission in an environment rich with family, food, song, and dance.

During the visit, the evaluation team had the opportunity to observe language learning in action and connect directly with community members, including Language Nest founder Jaz Mas’l, as well as Elders and young Language Nest participants. The experience provided Canadian Heritage with valuable insight into how community-led immersion programs are actively revitalizing Mi’kmaw language and culture.
