Gathering to Learn and Connect at the annual Mawitaik Wjit Knijannaq ECE Conference

April 28, 2026

More than 100 Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers from Mi’kmaw communities across Nova Scotia gathered in Dartmouth on April 10 and 11 for the Mawitaik Wjit Knijannaq Early Childhood Education Conference. The two-day event brought educators together to learn, connect, and share ideas while strengthening relationships with peers from across the province. The event was coordinated by our ECE team at Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey - Miranda Bernard and Zoie Denny-Julian, in partnership with CMM and UNSM.

Participants took part in a variety of engaging sessions focused on supporting children in the early years. Topics included team-building activities with Nova Scotia Community College, exploring the ECE framework used in New Brunswick, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, outdoor education in the early years, language revitalization, and more.

The evening of the first day featured a cultural showcase that celebrated Mi’kmaw traditions and community connection. Participants enjoyed drumming, dancing, and teachings on waltes and jikmaqn, creating a meaningful opportunity to share culture and knowledge.

The event was emceed by Mooselegs, whose music, humour, and lively games kept participants entertained throughout the conference. Beyond the sessions and activities, attendees valued the opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and build connections with fellow educators who share a passion for supporting Mi’kmaw children and families.
