Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey recently hosted a Girls Leadership Gathering for youth ages 14–18, bringing together 11 young women from Mi'kmaw communities across the province. The gathering created an uplifting and supportive space where participants could learn, create, and strengthen their cultural knowledge while building confidence as future leaders.
Throughout the event, the girls took part in a variety of hands-on cultural and leadership activities. They participated in Mi’kmaw language lessons, learning new words and phrases and were also introduced to traditional dance, gaining an understanding of the teachings, movement, and meaning behind each step.
One of the highlights of the gathering was the opportunity to make their own ribbon skirts. Guided by mentors, each participant designed and created a skirt that reflected her identity, creativity, and pride in who she is. The room was filled with laughter, conversation, and a spirit of support as the girls worked together.
Beyond cultural learning, the gathering encouraged friendship, mentorship, and personal growth. The girls left with new skills, renewed confidence, and stronger connections to each other and to their culture.
The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of lifting up young women and providing opportunities for them to see themselves as leaders grounded in culture, and community.
