Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK) welcomed approximately 80 Kisiku (Elders) from across Nova Scotia to Dartmouth from October 19–21 for a special gathering focused on sharing knowledge, stories and experiences.
With designated representatives from each MK community, the gathering provided an opportunity for Elders to come together, reconnect and share their thoughts on topics that are important to Mi’kmaw communities and future generations.
Upon arrival, each Elder received a welcome bag filled with thoughtful gifts, including a Tracey Metallic backpack, a cozy throw blanket, a jacket featuring Kisiku on the back, and snacks. The first evening was spent enjoying supper, music and karaoke, with cards and games available for those who wanted to play. The following evening brought plenty of excitement with a merchandise bingo featuring some amazing prizes.
During the daytime sessions, Elders were divided into four groups to discuss themes important to Mi’kmaw knowledge, culture and education. The discussions focused on Ta’n Telo’ktik , Treaty Education and Preservation, Ceremonies and Rituals, and the question, “What were gatherings like?”
These conversations provided a valuable opportunity for Elders to share their teachings, memories, perspectives and ideas. Their knowledge and lived experiences offer an important connection to the past while helping guide the work being done for future generations.
MK recorded the discussions in each room so that the feedback can be revisited and used to help shape and develop future programming. The presence and participation of the Elders throughout the gathering meant so much to the entire MK team.
The Kisiku Gathering was a reminder of the importance of making space for our Elders’ voices and ensuring their knowledge, experiences and teachings continue to guide the work we do. MK extends its heartfelt thanks to all the Elders who joined us and shared their time, wisdom and stories.
