Students from Mi’kmaw schools across the province gathered at We’koqma’q Mi’kmaw School this month for the 2026 Math Showcase, celebrating the many ways math connects with culture and everyday life. Approximately 100 students from Primary to Grade 12 took part in the event, proudly sharing projects that highlighted creativity, learning, and cultural knowledge.
The showcase featured a wide variety of innovative and engaging displays, with students exploring how math can be found in many aspects of Mi’kmaw culture. Projects demonstrated connections between math and artwork, beading, fishing, drumming, and more, showing how mathematical concepts are woven into traditions and daily experiences.
Throughout the event, students had the opportunity to explain their projects, share their learning, and connect with peers from other communities. Their enthusiasm and pride were evident as they presented their work and celebrated the many ways math can be meaningful, practical, and culturally connected.
In the middle of the event, students took a well-earned dance break and came together to dance the Kojua, bringing energy and laughter to the day. The spontaneous moment added to the sense of community and fun, giving participants a chance to celebrate together between presentations.
The 2026 Math Showcase was a wonderful opportunity to bring students together to learn from one another, build confidence, and recognize the important role math plays in both education and culture.
