December 2, 2022
Our Sports and Recreation Team was very excited to be able to host the annual Sports Summit at full capacity this year. Over the past few years, the event has been very limited due to gathering limits throughout the province so it was great to be able to have everyone back together again this year.
Day one of the summit began with a session for NAIG coaches and mission staff. They covered important topics that the coaches will need to know such as the different required courses and training they need to have along with a review of their sport tech packages and athlete eligibility. During the afternoon, there were presentations from communities, swim NS and a fun and interactive session on the ASK program to end the day.
On the second day, there were presentations from NAIG host society, NSMSG host Millbrook, and an introduction on the Rekindling our Spirit project in the morning. The afternoon was spent at the Canada Games Centre taking part in interactive sessions on Basketball and Athletics. Everyone really enjoyed the day.
The banquet on the evening of Day 2 is an event that everyone looks forward to every year. It is a very special occasion where 3 people are inducted into the Mi’kmaq Sports Hall of Fame. This year we were very proud to honour:
Milton Gould - Coach
Shirley Francis - Builder
Richard Denny - Athlete
It is such an inspiring event for everyone in attendance to hear about all the work our inductees have put into sport in each of the 3 categories.
The final morning of the summit was a wrap-up of the event and door prizes for the participants. It was a great event and everyone is looking forward to next year!
