April 2023 Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey Department Updates

April 25, 2023

Academic Services

On April 12th, the Autism Nova Scotia flag was raised at Province House in recognition of Autism Acceptance Month. Our Director of Academic Services, Janean Marshall is a member of the Board of Directors of Autism Nova Scotia and was on location for the flag raising.

Numeracy

The whole month has been very busy with grades 1 and 2 doing their Aliet math holistic assessments in MK schools. Students have enjoyed reading more about Aliet and love doing the work on the iPads.

On April 24, the elementary teachers joined a virtual PD session on Mathematizing Student Thinking. The topic focussed on the importance of connecting problem solving to everyday life and building math skills, knowledge and confidence.

Our Elementary Numeracy Consultant had the opportunity to attend the OAME conference from  April 26-28 where she learned many new fresh ideas for future math planning and professional learning.

Post Secondary

Our Post Secondary Navigator, Melissa Reid has been coordinating workshops throughout the Maritimes with post secondary and high school students. The workshops have been focussed on cultural teachings such as making Jikmaqn, medicine pouches and drums. There are plans to offer other workshops in the coming weeks where students will have the opportunity to make a sweatlodge and ribbon skirt. So far these workshops have been very well attended and the students are really enjoying themselves.

Tech Services

Kim MacKinnon, our Elementary Technology Integration Consultant had the opportunity to work with some classes in Pictou Landing, LSK and Bear River. They got to learn about basic coding and worked together to figure out how to code Sphero Indie. It was a great learning experience for everyone. The students worked in small groups to brainstorm, plan, re-evaluate, and troubleshoot. Essential skills of patterning, teamwork, and communication were put to great use.

Kim also helped Bear River Elementary students prepare their poetry to enter a contest. They worked together to learn all about Book Creator, and created their own poetry books with videos, voice recordings and photos of some of their art. They did an amazing job. We wish them luck in the contest!
