This year marked the 300th anniversary of the signing of the Peace and Friendship Treaties, an important milestone in the relationship between the Mi’kmaq and the Crown.
To commemorate the occasion, community leadership, students, members of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council, and community members gathered at Fort Anne National Historic Site on June 4th to honour the enduring legacy of the treaties and reflect on their continued importance today.
Jacqueline Prosper, our Treaty Education Lead worked in partnership with the Mi’kmaq Grand Council and the Government of Canada to plan the event. Support was also provided by the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, the Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq, Kwilmu'kw Maw-klusuaqn, the Nova Scotia Women's History Society, and other government partners.
The event featured drumming, dancing, and other cultural activities that celebrated Mi’kmaw history, culture, and resilience. A commemorative plaque was also unveiled during the gathering and can now be found at the historic site as a lasting reminder of the treaty relationship and its significance for future generations.
