Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey

April 30, 2025

This April, Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey proudly celebrated Autism Acceptance Month with a series of inclusive, joyful events that recognized and honored the unique strengths of our community members on the autism spectrum. By embracing diversity in how we think, learn, and connect, we deepened our commitment to creating spaces where every learner feels valued and seen.

Highlights of the month included a sensory-friendly movie screening, allowing individuals with sensory sensitivities to enjoy the magic of film in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Across our schools, silent disco parties brought music, movement, and fun in a way that respected everyone’s sensory needs—letting students dance to their own beat, literally and figuratively.

We launched a storytelling contest, inviting students, families, and educators to share about their autism “superheroes”—the people in their lives whose perspectives, talents, and resilience inspire others. These stories reminded us that autism is not a limitation, but a powerful part of identity that contributes to the richness of our communities.

We also delivered banners, posters and swag bags for Autism Acceptance month that could be given out as prizes for all schools.

Through these events, Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey not only celebrated acceptance, but continued its journey toward a more inclusive and understanding future for all learners.
