Mi’kmaw students from across Nova Scotia came together in early May to celebrate both cultural heritage and mathematical thinking at the annual Show Me Your Math event. The showcase highlighted how traditional knowledge can intersect with math in meaningful and creative ways.
Students presented projects that explored everything from basket weaving patterns and dress-making measurements to wikoums and symmetry in art, demonstrating how math is deeply embedded in Mi’kmaw ways of life. Their displays showed how math is more than numbers—it’s a part of culture, language, and identity.
Elders, educators, and families joined in the celebration and supported the students efforts to show how math education can be inclusive, engaging, and culturally relevant.
Show Me Your Math is more than a showcase. It’s a movement to honor Indigenous knowledge and empower youth to see themselves as mathematicians, creators, and culture-bearers.
We are so proud of all of the students for the effort they put into making their projects and for showcasing their work!
