Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK) celebrated Adult Learners Week during the first week of April by supporting communities and their commitment and dedication to recognizing the importance of lifelong learning in Mi’kmaw communities across the province.
One of the highlights of the week were the elders and iPad sessions, where elders received new iPads and hands-on support in setting up Apple IDs, downloading apps, and learning how to use technology in their daily lives. These sessions are always enjoyed by the elders because it gives them an opportunity to build digital skills and ask questions in a relaxed environment surrounded by their peers.

In Annapolis Valley First Nation, adult learners gathered for a lunch-and-learn focused on goal setting and future workshops they'd like to see take place in the community. Participants shared their educational journeys and encouraged one another as they explored what lifelong learning means within their own lives and for the community.

Another exciting event celebrating adult learners was the grand opening of a new lifelong learning centre in Wagmatcook First Nation. The new space will serve as a valuable resource for adult learners by providing internet access, learning supports, and a welcoming environment for individuals pursuing education and skills development.

MK’s post-secondary team also hosted a province-wide contest inviting community members to share what lifelong learning means to them. The stories reflected the many ways education continues throughout life through personal growth, cultural learning, career development, and community connection. Congratulations to contest winners Jackie Stewart, Natalie Denny, and Jessica Pike.
Adult Learners Week served as a reminder that learning never stops and that education can happen at any age. MK is proud to celebrate the many adult learners who continue to inspire their communities through perseverance and a commitment to growth.
