Mi’kmaw students in Grades 9 and 10 had an opportunity to explore careers in health care during MK’s Health Career Event, held at Dartmouth General Hospital on October 19.
Students travelled to Dartmouth on Sunday, with overnight accommodations at the Delta Dartmouth, before beginning an early morning at the hospital. The day started with young Mi’kmaw doctors and medical students sharing their educational journeys, experiences and advice on pursuing a career in medicine.
Students then had the opportunity to job shadow professionals in areas that interested them, including radiology, nursing, nutrition, physiotherapy and more. This hands-on experience gave students a closer look at the many career paths available in the health-care field.
In the afternoon, students participated in CPR training, learning important lifesaving skills and practising on CPR mannequins before heading home.
The event gave students a chance to explore their interests, ask questions and learn directly from health-care professionals and young Mi’kmaw role models who are making their way in the field. By connecting students with these experiences, MK continues to encourage youth to consider the many opportunities available to them in health care.
