In December, we were proud to host our first Family Mi’kmaw Language Retreat in Sydney, welcoming families from Cape Breton and Paqtnkek. Five families and six dedicated teachers came together for a meaningful weekend focused on language, culture, and connection. Participants made jikmaqn, learned the kojua, and explored practical language resources, discovering ways to incorporate Mi’kmaw language into their everyday lives at home. The weekend was filled with learning, laughter, and shared experiences, and we are excited to continue this work. Planning is already underway for a second Family Language Retreat, which will be held on the mainland in January.
