Mi'kmaw Language and Culture
Our new Etuaptamumk Curriculum Consultant Bobbilee Dennis has started work with Jeff Orr, alongside the Principal and staff of ESK in Eskasoni to support them in a curriculum development journey. They held their first meeting in February where everyone had the opportunity to discuss what they are currently teaching the topics they feel are missing. Everyone is very excited to work on this new initiative!

Our sports team hosted ID camps for NAHC during the month of February. The male and female teams will attend the 2026 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships which will be hosted in Regina Saskatchewan in May 2026. The 40 athletes, their bench staff, chaperones and the MK sport team will take part in a 6-day tournament for elite hockey players from across the country. Our youth have so much talent that it makes the selection process difficult for the coaches. We are so proud of the athletes who came out to showcase their skills.

Academic Services

Presentations on OCAP and the importance of data collection and ownership, legal documents pertaining to education, rights of parent and student, the importance of accurate record keeping and IEP development process. We also enjoyed an informative and fun medicine pouch workshop! A huge thank you to Beverly Jeddore, Kathy Denny, Union of NS Mi’kmaq, Kate Ashley- Education Law Professor and Freelance Legal Services, and MK Program Services Consultant, Doreen Stevens for their presentations.

Student Services
MK staff were invited to join a student wellness day at Paqtnkek Education Centre this month. Tammy Bernard led the students in a smudge and mindfulness activity, while Doreen Stevens and Ambrah MacNeil led the students in a yoga session and guided meditation.

They learned how to make Tribal Necklaces with Clifford Paul while checking out all the fun things to do at Capers Bouncy Rental. They also enjoyed a venue that offered all types of gaming including board games at Soulvaria VR. More recently, students travelled to Membertou Heritage Park to learn about Sacred Fire Teachings led by Zacc Paul.
