February 2026 School and Community news - Pictou Landing

March 9, 2026

The Grade 5–8 students at Pictou Landing First Nation School began creating Respecting Kiju (Respecting Mother) in 2025 by sharing their own stories and thoughts about food, family, and community. They talked about what it means to gather, hunt, cook, and eat together, and how these experiences connect them to their land, waters, and one another.

Students then went to visit the space where the art would be housed in Sobeys newly renovated head office.  While they were visiting, we hosted a show and share for the Sobey’s employees.  Students offered group sessions to share their teachings on the drum, bead work, residential schools, waltes, language and Medicines with over 100 Sobeys Head Office workers.

When we returned to the school, they worked together, reflecting on traditional food practices that were once restricted or made unsafe. They discussed what it means to reclaim and protect those practices today. Their ideas shaped the symbols, colours, and images in the artwork.

Each student contributed their own perspective and creative voice, while listening to and building on the ideas of others. Through drawing, discussion, and shared decision-making, they created a piece that represents not an individual expression but a collective vision.

Respecting Kiju reflects how these students see the role in caring for Mother Earth — honouring the knowledge passed down to them and recognizing their responsibility to protect the land and waters for future generations.
