Inaugural Mi'kmaw Language Day Celebrated Across Nova Scotia

June 3, 2025

Monday May 12 was the inaugural celebration of Mi’kmaw Language Day in Nova Scotia! This special day will now be celebrated on the Monday after Mother's Day annually. To mark the special occasion, Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey created a video filled with faces, voices, and language of community that you can view here:  https://youtu.be/xZuumAyjebc

In addition, the province also developed an animated short for Mi’kmaw Language Day which can be viewed here: https://youtube.com/shorts/Nty2rnvmbdQ?feature=share.

Wela’lioq to the provincial departments of Treaty Education and Communities, Culture, and Heritage for your support in celebrating Mi’kmaw Language Day with us.

An event was held at the Museum of Natural History which included knowledge sharing, celebrations of culture, and a tour of the new exhibit, Pjila'si.

We would also like to acknowledge our Gaelic friends Lewis MacKinnon and Shannon MacMullin who joined us in celebration of our special day which takes place during Gaelic Nova Scotia Month.
