January 2022 Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey Department Updates

January 31, 2022

Elementary Literacy

Sheila Gould, our Elementary Literacy Consultant coordinated an 8 session online professional development opportunity for educators called Making Champions. Making Champions is the next step forward to formative assessment. There are 23 participants from MK schools who will learn more about assessment, evaluation and leadership. "It is my hope that teachers will share what they learn with their peers," said Sheila.

The sessions are done by two facilitators from Connect to Learning. The first session was held on Jan 13th, 2022 and the teachers really enjoyed it. The facilitators understand and appreciate the tremendous work teachers do and want to support them as much as possible. A culturally relevant piece shared by an Indigenous elder with the facilitator from our first lesson: Everyone is a seed, a sprout or a tree at any given point in their learning experience. This process must be modeled to students so that the students will learn to assess their work critically. In each process there are ways to improve using co-criteria. Co-criteria is criteria that a teacher and students build to become better at something like writing for example.  The second online PD session was held on Jan 27, 2022.

We would like to thank all of the participants for their attendance and attentiveness!

Sports and Rec

Over the holiday break, the Sports and Rec team, along with the rest of the Mi'kmaw Language and Culture department held an online photo/video contest.

To enter participants were asked to upload a short video or photo to Facebook doing something sport, recreation, or culture related using the hashtag #MKSportsandRec2021 and send an email to Jeannine or Jasmine to let them know their name, age and community. All participants were entered into one of 2 draws. (One for Unama'ki/Paqtnkek and the other for the rest of the mainland communities)
