Two Waltes board making workshops brought together participants from across Nova Scotia to learn and celebrate this traditional Mi’kmaw game. The first workshop took place in December in Indian Island, New Brunswick, the home community of Waltes board maker John Barlow, where 10 participants gathered to learn directly from him.
A second workshop was held in February at the NSCC building in Wagmatcook, welcoming another group of 10 participants from across the province. During both sessions, participants learned how to create their own Waltes boards, as well as the dice and counting sticks used in the game. The workshops provided a hands-on opportunity to learn about the craftsmanship and cultural significance of Waltes while helping keep this important tradition alive.
