March 2022 Mi'kmaw Language, Culture and Sports and Rec Department Update

April 1, 2022

Language Department

Our Language Consultant Alwyn Jeddore hosted a 2-day Virtual Language and Culture event. The event was open to 100 participants and there was a waiting list for more people who wanted to take part. It was a huge success! The presenters for each day were Curtis Michael, Gerald Gloade and Ernest Johnson. "All the participants were very much engaged and enjoyed themselves," said Alwyn Jeddore. "Many people expressed a sense of gratitude for us being able to host this event, which we couldn't have done without the support of funding through Canadian Heritage." Due to the interest in this event, there are plans to develop other events such as this which will allow more people to take part.

Sports and Recreation

Mi’kmaw Sport Leaders recently gathered at Oak Island Resort in Western Shore,NS for a 3 day Retreat Marc.22-24,2022. Presentations were received from NAIG 2023, Safe Sport, ASC National Coaching Program and the recent project ‘Mi’kmaw Sport & Coaching Environmental scan. The participants also presented their community plans on sport. MK Sport staff organized the event and also shared their program and delivery initiatives. Another event is planned for June.

A special announcement was made on March 24th at a Chief's meeting on sport. Together, all the communities came together to give $150,000 to help make NAIG 2023 the best Games yet.

Red Road Project

The Red Road Youth were invited to a gathering at Windhorse Farms on the first weekend of the March Break. The participants were very eager to learn and share their culture and knowledge. Beverly Jeddore was able to teach them how to dance and sing the Kojua. She also gave them her language cards to teach them Animate & Inanimate verbs, which they took home with them. They also took part in cultural presentations with the invited elders and sat around the big fireplace and talked about being L’nu. The youth really enjoyed it and created some amazing friendships.
