MK Prom
We are gearing up for our first annual MK Prom and we are so excited! We will be doing an early bird registration draw on May 7th for 2 of our big prizes so all grads who have registered by that date will be entered into the draw! Our deadline for registration is May 15 and we are unable to accept late registration after that date.
LSK school in Sipekne'katik wanted to offer their teachers some professional development sessions on language and culture this month. Some members of our MK staff visited their school to offer 2 different sessions. On April 3, Michael R Denny, Kyla Bernard and Beverly Jeddore worked with the teachers and showed them how to skin eels. They demonstrated how to connect the activity and teachings across all areas of the curriculum. On April 30th, they were on hand as the teachers learned about the peaked cap. They linked the curriculum to this activity as well and demonstrated how language can be incorporated with the teachings.
We visited several communities this month to engage with the youth on the topic of language and culture. It was great to hear about all of the exciting things that are happening in their communities. We heard first hand from the youth what they currently have and what they'd like to see more of. We also shared some of the exciting initiatives that MK offers such as our youth language committee, Red Road Project and our MK prom. We are hoping to get out to visit all of our communities in the coming months.
We celebrated all of the people who work as administrative assistants in our schools across the province this month. We delivered a small gift to each of them to let them know that we truly appreciate all they do.
Elementary Numeracy
Kyla Bernard, our Elementary Numeracy consultant was working on a cultural Numeracy project. Her vision was to introduce the math involved in making ribbon skirts. LSK adopted the project and has created skirts for the MK prom.
There have been over 133000 questions answered and practiced on the IXL platform which covers both math and literacy in all grades. Kyla is currently receiving feedback from teachers letting her know if they wish to continue to use ixl in the next school year.
