Ribbon Skirt Workshops Across Atlantic Campuses

March 9, 2026

Mi’kmaw students at post-secondary schools across Atlantic Canada had the opportunity to take part in ribbon skirt workshops earlier this year. While the workshops were originally planned for January, each school hosted their session at a time that worked best for their students and campus schedules.

Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey provided the materials for the workshops, while the schools welcomed students and arranged local instructors to guide them through the process of creating their own ribbon skirts. This collaboration allowed students to learn sewing skills while connecting with culture and creativity alongside their peers.

This marked the third time these workshops have been offered, and once again the results were inspiring. Each skirt reflected the personality and creativity of the student who made it, and the finished pieces turned out beautifully. The workshops provided a meaningful space for students to gather, learn, and celebrate culture together.
