MK Schools Celebrate Autism Acceptance Month

May 5, 2026

Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK) celebrated Autism Acceptance Month with a variety of student-centered activities that brought students together and highlighted the importance of inclusion across our schools.

A highlight of the month was the series of silent discos hosted by Ambrah MacNeil and Doreen Stevens. Travelling to MK schools throughout the province, they created fun, welcoming spaces where students could enjoy music at a volume that felt comfortable to them while dancing with their peers. The silent discos were a big hit as always!

Schools also found their own meaningful ways to celebrate. Some organized outings where students enjoyed swimming and shared meals together, while others hosted community walks to raise awareness and show support. Many schools held sensory-friendly days, where students were invited to wear their comfy clothes and they held sensory friendly activities which offered an opportunity for all students to have their sensory needs supported. Students also got creative—designing their own sensory bottles and taking part in contests that encouraged learning and expression around autism acceptance.

At the end of the month, many schools took part in the #RedInstead movement and wore red shirts to help raise awareness, celebrate neurodiversity, and show support for autistic individuals and their families.

These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment across MK schools to create environments where all students feel seen, supported, and valued. We are proud of the work happening in our communities to continue building inclusive spaces where every learner can thrive.
