This month, three different schools across the province hosted Waltes tournaments.
The first tournament took place in Pictou Landing school where middle school students from grades 5-8 gathered in a lively gymnasium to try their hand at the game. Teachers, Elders and MK staff guided students through the rules, helping them build both skill and cultural understanding.
The second tournament was held in Wagmatcook school, where some competitive high school students battled it out in a best 2 out of 3 match to move on to the next round.
The final event was held in We'koqma'q school for students from grade primary - 4. In this school, many of the high school students helped the younger students by teaching them how to count. All of the students tried their best and learned the importance of fun competition and good sportsmanship.
All three tournaments highlighted the power of games like Waltes to bring communities together, celebrate Mi'kmaq culture, and keep traditions thriving in schools today.
