Mi'kmaw Language and Culture

This fall, our Youth Engagement Coordinators travelled across the province to connect with young people through a series of powerful culture and language focused sessions. Each gathering offered youth meaningful opportunities to learn, share, and strengthen their identity alongside community knowledge keepers.

During their language nights, youth took part in hands-on cultural activities including prepping and cooking kataq, learning Kojua dances, storytelling around the fire in the tipi, participating in a sweat lodge, and sharing a traditional meal together. The coordinators also hosted the Jr. Mentor Apprentice Gathering, which brought young leaders together to build confidence and deepen their language skills.

These events were made possible through strong community support, including local language specialists, Elders, and partners such as Nepisulti’kul and EFCW. Their guidance and collaboration helped create welcoming spaces where youth could learn, laugh, and continue their journey in Mi’kmaw language and culture.

The Trauma Informed Lead Team had their gathering on November 22, 2025. We came together to edit the Trauma Informed Guide that is currently being constructed for the Mi'kmaw Kinamatnewey Family of schools. This guide has been a 3 year project and we are hoping to have it completed within the next few months.

Elementary Math and Literacy

MK educators gathered at the Delta Dartmouth for a Math and Literacy PD Day filled with hands-on learning and collaboration.Teachers began the day with math sessions led by Dr. David Costello, who shared engaging activities and free resources to support classroom instruction. Bobbilee Dennis also introduced two new books, Ma’kits Doll and its companion materials, giving teachers the chance to create their own dolls as part of the session.

Jeff Ward and Dennis joined to present the LovE Nova Scotia program, offering insight into new ways to support student well-being and connection.

In the afternoon, educators took part in a medicine-pouch-making workshop facilitated by Ayden Pierro which was a relaxing and meaningful way to end a full day of learning.
