Second Annual MK Prom Celebrates Mi’kmaw Graduates from Across Nova Scotia

June 3, 2026

On May 30, Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey hosted its second annual MK Prom, bringing together Grade 12 Mi’kmaw students from communities across Nova Scotia.

Students were bussed to the St. Francis Xavier University campus in Antigonish, arriving at 1 p.m. to kick off the festivities. The afternoon began with pizza and time to relax before students prepared for the evening ahead.

Throughout the afternoon, students had the opportunity to enjoy a full prom preparation experience. Hair stylists, makeup artists, nail technicians, and a barber were all on site to help students get ready for the big night. While waiting for their appointments, students spent time playing cards and board games and just connecting with one another.

MK also offered ribbon skirts and vests for any students who needed them, helping ensure everyone could feel confident and celebrated on their special day.

Dinner was served at 5 p.m., followed by the dance beginning at 6:30 p.m. The evening was filled with music and dancing as students came together to mark an important milestone in their lives.

Each student also went home with prizes, with some of the major giveaways including a PlayStation 5, Meta Quest, and AirPods. At the end of the evening, students were safely bussed home at 9 p.m.

The MK Prom continues to grow into a meaningful event that celebrates Mi’kmaw youth and their accomplishments as they prepare for the next chapter of their journeys. Most importantly, the students all looked absolutely amazing and brought incredible energy to the celebration.

Wela’lioq to everyone who helped organize, volunteer, and support this special event for our graduates.
