Elementary Mathematics

Kyla Bernard has been busy visiting schools, connecting with teachers, and supporting math classrooms across MK schools! On September 18, Kyla provided a professional development session at Wagmatcook. Teachers explored a variety of resources and supports, including:

  • Math materials and resources
  • The Math website
  • Updated pacing guides
  • New math resources
  • IXL Math and ways to make the most of the digital program

It was a great opportunity to connect with teachers and help everyone get set up for a successful school year!

Since the first day of school, 576 students in MK schools have registered for IXL Math! Kyla has been busy helping teachers set up their class rosters, update licenses, and get started with the program. Many new teachers are also interested in using IXL this year, which is fantastic to see! If teachers would like to learn more about IXL, need help getting set up, or have questions about the program, Kyla is always happy to help.

Kyla has also updated the Math Website for MK teachers with the latest pacing guides and additional resources to support math teaching throughout the year.

Several new resources have been created, and many classrooms have already received new math materials. If Kyla hasn't made it to your school or classroom yet, don't worry — she's making her way around! She looks forward to connecting with more teachers and continuing to support math learning across MK schools throughout the school year.

Wellness

Tammy Bernard has been busy supporting schools and staff through professional learning focused on Trauma-Informed Practice and Wellness.

Recently, Tammy and the team delivered a presentation exploring trauma, what it means to be trauma-informed, and the importance of wellness in our schools and communities. Tammy also spent time at Membertou School, working alongside teachers on a creative hieroglyphics painting activity that encouraged connection, reflection, and creativity.

From September 18–20, 2026, Tammy Bernard, Catherine Rahey, Ambrah MacNeil, and the Trauma-Informed Lead Team came together at the Native Women’s Resiliency Centre in Millbrook to celebrate the completion of the Trauma-Informed Guide and participate in Train-the-Trainer professional learning.

It was a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the team’s work and continue building capacity for trauma-informed and wellness-focused practices across our schools.

Langauge and Culture

ECE

On September 28–29, MK Daycare and Head Start cooks attended a Nutrition in the Early Years training session in Millbrook. The training provided valuable information and practical strategies to support healthy eating and nutrition for young children.

This training is important because early childhood is a critical time for developing healthy eating habits and supporting children’s growth, development, and overall well-being. The knowledge and skills gained will help our cooks continue providing nutritious, balanced meals and creating positive experiences around food for the children in their care.

Sports and Healthy Active Living

The Team Nova Scotia NAIG Golf Development Camp recently took part in the Genevieve Francis Memorial Golf Gathering Fundraiser. It was a wonderful opportunity for young golfers to build their skills while supporting a meaningful cause.
