Students came together in the community of Shubenacadie on September 28 for Fill Our Heart, a meaningful gathering to honour and remember residential school survivors and the children who didn't make it home.
Local public schools and MK community schools were invited to take part in the gathering. One of the most powerful moments was seeing youth and Elders come together to place flags in the orange heart, representing residential school students whose lives were impacted by the residential school system.
The event opened with a prayer from Mary Lou Bernard, who attended the Shubenacadie Residential School as a child. Her prayer was followed by an honour song performed by the Eastern Eagle Drum Group.
The girls' drum group from ABMHS also shared several songs during the gathering, adding the voices of youth to this important moment of remembrance.
For those who could not attend in person, the event was livestreamed, allowing people from across communities to watch and take part. Fill Our Hearts was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering, honouring survivors, and ensuring that the stories of those who did not make it home are never forgotten.
