On October 2–3, leaders from across Mi’kma’ki gathered in Halifax for the Treaty Education Symposium. Chiefs, Councils, and members of the Mi’kmaw Grand Council, along with leaders from the Mi'kmaw organizations across the province were invited to the two-day event which created space to deepen understanding of the history and ongoing importance of treaties.
Participants explored topics such as the often forgotten treaties, the Sante’ Mawiomi’s persistence in treaty implementation, and the continued revival of treaty relationships. Presenters highlighted both historical contexts and the present-day responsibilities that come with being treaty people.
Throughout the symposium, leaders also shared their perspectives on what should be prioritized in treaty education for both schools and communities. Their insights will help guide future educational approaches, ensuring that treaty teachings remain grounded in Mi’kmaw voices and experiences.
The gathering reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening treaty knowledge and upholding the spirit and intent of the treaties for generations to come.
